For those living with multiple sclerosis (MS), even the simplest of tasks can be difficult. Our disability lawyers in Chicago have seen firsthand the effects that MS has on its sufferers as well as surrounding friends and family members. In honor of Multiple Sclerosis Education & Awareness Month, our team wants to do our part by calling attention to this chronic illness.
What is It?
MS is a chronic illness that impacts the central nervous system (CNS) wherein which the immune system attacks the protective layer around nerve fibers (myelin). Because of this, inflammation and scar tissue develops, making it difficult for your brain to send signals to other parts of your body. While there are a wide variety of symptoms that MS sufferers experience, the two most common are fatigue and difficulty walking. Other symptoms include tremors, acute or chronic pain, or cognitive issues that involve memory or problem-solving skills.
Cause
While MS is not hereditary, having a family member with MS slightly raises your risk of developing it. Research also points to certain environmental triggers such as a virus or a toxin that can set the immune system off.
Obtaining Disability Benefits
The Social Security Administration (SSA) recognizes MS as a qualifying impairment for disability. There are specific factors that are required in order for the grant to be placed, such as visual impairment, disorganization of motor function, and mental impairment. Our disability lawyers in Chicago understand the ins and outs of obtaining SSD or SSI benefits for those who are suffering.
