Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits Can Be Complex

Published on February 4th, 2012

It was just another typical day on the job. You go in to work, expecting nothing more than what you do every day. But something unexpected happens and you suffer a serious, debilitating injury that leaves you wondering if you will ever be able to work again.

Those who find themselves in a situation similar to the hypothetical one above will likely have to face many questions, including, “am I eligible for social security disability benefits?” When recovering from a traumatic injury, figuring out whether you can receive these benefits may be overwhelming.

Social Security disability benefits are intended for those who have an injury or medical condition that prevents them from working. Though it seems simple, there are a number of requirements that you must meet before you are eligible. The Social Security Administration looks at a number of requirements, including how long you had worked and when the injury or condition occurred.

But even then, people are concerned not only for their own interests but also for the interests of their family, including spouse and children. In some situations, the worker may have been the sole wage earner in the family. No longer able to provide, family members may also be in need of benefits.

The good news is that a worker’s spouse and children may be able to receive Social Security disability benefits if they meet certain requirements as well. However, this can only complicate the application process.

Whatever the situation, suffering a disabling injury is frustrating. Trying to figure out whether you qualify for Social Security disability benefits can make things more challenging. Instead of trying to sort through all the paperwork and medical requirements without help, it can be beneficial to speak with a Social Security disability attorney.
